The Pause That Supports Digestion
A few months ago I was having a text exchange with my daughter who reminded me — “Mom, do your rest-and-digest and don’t-eat-when-stressed thing…” Clearly, I was stressed. The fact of the matter is we shouldn’t eat when we are stressed — even stress eating. And it’s especially true if, when stressed, you lose your appetite. It’s probably not a good time to eat.
Stress and Digestion
When we are in this mode, our sympathetic or “action,” fight-and-flight portion of the nervous system is at work. We want to first try and center ourselves and get to a calm state. I don’t mean push your challenges away or hide from what troubles you. Rather, give yourself a break by putting whatever is bringing you stress on pause.
Eating in a Calmer State
When you are in a calm state — or even just calmer — it is a more optimum time to eat. Your parasympathetic nervous system becomes active and creates an environment more efficient for digestion and nutrient absorption. And when you do eat, do so “like a mensch.” Take a real break — get away from your desk, your work, and the things that give you stress. Bring your food to a table or a park bench. Savor this time and make your meal a small celebration — nourishment for body and soul.
A Mindful Moment with Your Food
You might simply take a moment to notice your food — the smell, the colors, the textures, the taste. Allow yourself enough time to chew and enjoy it at a comfortable pace. Even if it’s just a smoothie, some juiced veggies, or a bowl of soup, giving yourself a few mindful minutes helps your body shift into rest-and-digest.
Why a Small Pause Matters
Take 10–30 minutes to nourish yourself with something nutritious and delicious. Eat or drink with mindfulness and intention. Bring a little gratitude to the moment — for caring for yourself, for the fuel you’re giving your body, and for the chance to absorb nourishment, reframe, and recharge.
When you resume your work — even after just 10 minutes — you may find you feel better, clearer, and more capable of handling whatever comes next.
Stepping Back In
It’s amazing how a small pause — the kind my daughter reminded me to take — can shift how we meet the rest of the day, bringing clearer vision and a renewed perspective.
